ABSTRACT

In the written component of his doctoral thesis in fine arts, From the Essence of Matter to the Transformation of Substances, Timo Heino explores the meanings of matter and the matter of meanings. The research focuses on works of art as processes in which the symbolism of materials and the beliefs, conceptions and concepts relevant to them are connected to the tangible essence of matter and incessant change, as elements of combinations in many forms.

Heino’s research creates new, material symbolism by making visible the repressed processes and acknowledging the constant exchange of materials taking place in the processes of the material world. In Heino’s works, instability is closely intertwined with the materiality of the memory, the material memory of objects and the fragility, delicacy and evanescence of our existence.

The written component of the doctoral thesis is available in Finnish.
