LINE DRAWN ON WATER

2014. Carbon fiber, steel bar, 12 m. Kalasatama residential district, Helsinki.

Line Drawn on Water is a public artwork commissioned by the City of Helsinki to the new residential district of Kalasatama (Fiskehamnen) under the supervision of the Helsinki Art Museum. The 12-meter-long sculpture consists of a black carbon fiber kayak and a steel bar that goes down to earth from it. As my starting-point, I have taken the environment of the artwork, its maritime location and the residential character of the area. The artwork forms a visual “chord” with the surrounding buildings, the wedge-shaped courtyard, and the street plane.

The form of a kayak in Line Drawn on Water refers to an ancient maritime vehicle, which during the centuries has become streamlined and is now made of hi-tech materials, thus being updated to the era of speed and flying. The flowing form of the steel bar reflects light, which symbolized the line left by a kayak on water – a line drawn on water.
